About the Society
The PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY OF BALLET SOCIETY was established 1987 to fulfill a two-part mission. The first is to aid talented students make the difficult transition from student to the ranks of professional artist. Through an audition process the Society selects students who have graduated from high school and are able to demonstrate that they possess the necessary requirements for becoming professional dancers. Each year the directors select two or three deserving students to participate in this special program that includes: a full scholarship for daily classes, coaching and rehearsing classical ballet segments as well as original contemporary choreography; performance opportunities; company audition arrangements including resume preparation and photography/video; and also financial assistance with living and travel expenses. The success rate for helping to place dancers into companies is an unprecedented fifty percent.
The other goal of the Society is to bring high quality dance to a variety of audiences, including children, senior citizens, the handicapped and other culturally deprived groups. The Society recognizes that attending quality dance performances can be very expensive. However, ticket prices are kept as low as possible, so that no one is excluded who wishes to attend and cannot afford high "downtown" ticket prices.
